New term: Product Goal
Scrum is 25 years old and like all of us, as we get older, is rethinking some of its old behaviors and making some more serious “commitments” towards its future. It wants to attract a wider audience beyond the IT field, and to reach into pharmaceuticals, marketing, medicine, education, etc. So they have simplified some of their principles with the recent Scrum Guide Update, which I have summarized in the following 8 points:
In summary - how much has really changed with this update?
For teams that have already been using Scrum to its fullest potential and getting value from it, there aren’t really that many changes in this update. Good teams have always had a Product Goal and used a Definition of Done. The main difference is that now we are calling all artifacts “commitments,” and are using more general terms to encourage other industries to start using Scrum.
It is therefore refreshing to see the original and still innovative Scrum principles, but delivered this time in a more user-friendly, open and welcoming vocabulary to include the analysts, researchers, scientists, doctors, educators and many more as “developers” of their products. The Scrum creators have taken a leaf out of their own book, have “inspected” and “adapted” to open its doors to even more working environments than ever before. That is why Scrum remains the best Agile method out there!
